Our Equity, Diversity and Learning Committee meets monthly with the goal of developing workshop sessions for all school administrators and for our leadership series. Using the Catholic lens of liberation theology and the preferential option for the poor, we continue to build capacity in our educator staff to identify and serve all students and staff in the Waterloo Catholic District School community. When surveyed, 81% of respondents answered positively that our schools work effectively with community and charitable partners to ensure students in need receive the required supports.
The First Peoples Festival is a celebration of First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures, history and realities hosted at the Waterloo Region Museum. This three-day festival includes opening ceremonies by Elders in the community, presentations of dance, music, traditional crafts and knowledge. Our Waterloo Catholic students in Grades 6-8 participate.
In August of 2017, Waterloo Catholic DSB hosted an Indigenous Education Summer Institute. Educators gathered to learn about Indigenous ways of knowing, to meet local Elders, and to work together more deeply to indigenize the curriculum they delver to their students, especially in light of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.
